Cortagen is a synthetic Khavinson bioregulator peptide — a tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Pro (AEDP)1 source, obtained by identifying the active short sequence within cortexin, a polypeptide extract of cerebral cortex. It belongs to the same family as the other bioregulators Peptigrity tracks (Cardiogen, Vesugen, Pinealon, Cartalax) and is targeted at CNS tissue. It is not approved for any use and is supplied strictly for research use only.

What is Cortagen and how is the bioregulator mechanism proposed to work?

Cortagen is the defined synthetic analog of a crude brain-cortex extract, and the Khavinson framework proposes that ultra-short peptides like it penetrate cell and nuclear membranes and interact directly with DNA to modulate tissue-specific gene expression — without receptor-mediated signaling. In this model, Cortagen tunes transcription in cortical neurons and glial cells. It's important to note this is a proposed mechanism drawn largely from one research group's work, not an independently established pathway.

What does the research on Cortagen show?

The published evidence — gene-expression and chromatin-remodeling experiments plus animal neuroprotection models — originates almost entirely from Vladimir Khavinson's group at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology; it is single-institution, and no human clinical trials have been published. Reported effects center on neuroprotection and cortical gene regulation in aged or injured models. Evidence level: Preclinical (single-group); no published human trials.

What are the known side effects and safety concerns?

There is no human safety data and no oncogenic-potential assessment for Cortagen specifically; the broad gene-regulatory activity proposed for these peptides has not been safety-characterized in people.
